An Old Kinmen Dream — What If the Distance to Xiamen Became Even Shorter?

An Old Kinmen Dream — A Visitor Looks Across the Water

I returned to Kinmen as an overseas visitor, partly to rediscover my roots and partly to look at the island with fresh eyes.

The journey was personal. My ancestral home lies across the water in Xiamen, and I had come back to visit my elderly aunt and reconnect with a family story that stretches across both shores.

Not long before the trip, I had watched a well-known film about the old letters sent home to Grandma — reminders of a generation when families separated by the water communicated through handwritten words, waiting months or even years for news.

Standing in Kinmen afterwards made that history feel remarkably real.

Across the sea was Xiamen.

So close geographically, yet for an earlier generation it could have felt like another world.

From Family History to a Different Question

I had also come to Kinmen looking for investment possibilities.

That changed the way I saw the island.

Kinmen is no longer interesting only because of its military history. Its Minnan villages, traditional homes, countryside, cycling routes, local food and slower pace of life give it something increasingly valuable:

character.

Then I heard again about an old Kinmen dream — the possibility that one day there might be a direct road connection between Kinmen and the Xiamen area.

It is an old aspiration, not a confirmed future project.

But the thought is fascinating.

A generation once waited for letters to cross the water.

Today, people travel by ferry.

And perhaps that is why the old bridge dream continues to capture the imagination.

Why Bieshan 碧山  Caught My Attention

My search eventually brought me to Bieshan in Jinsha Township.

What interested me was not another crowded commercial district.

It was almost the opposite.

Bieshan offers open space, greenery and traditional village surroundings. Jinsha has old settlements, Minnan architecture, Wind Lion Gods, countryside routes and attractions that give visitors a very different experience from nearby Xiamen.

That difference could become its strength.

Imagine spending time among Xiamen's towers, shopping districts and city life, then crossing to Kinmen for quiet villages, bicycles, heritage, local food and countryside.

For tourism, the two destinations do not have to compete.

They can complement each other.

And that makes places such as Bishan interesting for carefully considered tourism, hospitality, wellness or residential concepts, subject of course to planning and government approvals.

An Old Dream, Seen Through New Eyes

I came back thinking about my ancestors and an elderly aunt.

I found myself thinking about Kinmen's future.

Nobody can say whether the old dream of a Xiamen–Kinmen bridge will ever become reality. Governments change, policies change and major infrastructure requires agreement that does not presently exist.

So the bridge should remain exactly what history has made it:

an interesting Kinmen dream, not an investment promise.

But perhaps the more important story is already here.

Kinmen has transformed from a place where families once waited anxiously for letters from across the water into an island where visitors can cross, rediscover their roots and experience two remarkably different worlds within one journey.

And somewhere in quiet Bishan, I began to understand why that might also create opportunities.

Xiamen brings the city. Kinmen preserves the story.

And Bieshan 碧山  offers a quiet place from which to imagine what comes next.
